5 Ways to Honor Christ at Christmas
As we approach Christmas, it is essential that we pause and reflect on the true reason for our celebration. In the midst of the bustling holiday preparations, let us not forget the One whose birth we commemorate, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Here are five ways we can honor Christ at Christmas.
1. Dwell on the Incarnation
The Christmas story begins with the miraculous incarnation of Jesus, as described in the Gospel of John: "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14).
The incarnation is a profound mystery, where the eternal Son of God took on human flesh to dwell among us. As we celebrate Christmas, let us dwell deeply on the wonder of this divine act. It is a reminder of God's great love for us and His willingness to enter into our broken world.
2. Embrace Humility
In the Apostle Paul's letter to the Philippians, he exhorts us to embrace the same humility that Christ displayed in His incarnation: "Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:5-7).
Christmas reminds us of Christ's humility in leaving the glories of heaven to be born in a humble manger. As we celebrate His humility, let us cultivate a spirit of humility, recognizing that we are in great need of God's grace and mercy, just like every person we come in contact with.
3. Share the Gospel
Christmas provides a unique opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ with those who may not yet know Him. The angels came proclaiming to shepherds, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). The word “good news” is literally “gospel.”
The Apostle Paul said, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16). This Christmas, if we are to truly honor the Christ of Christmas, we must share the gospel of Christ with friends, family, and neighbors. Let our celebration of Christ's birth be a testimony to His saving grace.
4. Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is at the heart of a Christ-honoring Christmas. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul encourages us: "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Colossians 3:17).
Amid the exchanging of gifts, festive meals, and decorations, take time to express gratitude to God for the ultimate gift—the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. Reflect on the blessings in your life and remember that every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1:17).
5. Serve Others
Christmas is a season of giving, and what better way to honor Christ than by serving others with a servant's heart? The Apostle Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:13, "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another."
Consider how you can serve your community, your church, and those in need during this season. Whether it's volunteering at a local food pantry, reaching out to a lonely neighbor, or assisting a struggling family, let your actions reflect the love and compassion of Christ.
As we journey through the Christmas season, let our every act honor Christ, as the Apostle Paul said, "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Colossians 3:17).
May our celebrations be marked by a deep reverence for the One whose birth we commemorate. Let us imitate Christ's humility, share the gospel boldly, practice gratitude, and serve others with love. In doing so, we will honor the Christ of Christmas. And that is where true “joy to the world” is found.
