FBC Portland is a special church with a deep history in the Portland community. What began as a small gathering in an one-room school house in1890, has grown into a body of believers that exist to live out the Great Commandment so that we can fulfill the Great Commission. Through the years, God has allowed FBC to be the spiritual hub for the Portland community, plant local churches, and support local outreach & mission teams. We want you to be a part of where God is taking us next!

AUSTIN SCHOOL HOUSE

In 1890, a small group of people decided to begin a Baptist Church so they could worship locally in their community. On August 31, 1890, Reverend A. Malone and a group of Christians met at the Austin school house. There were nine charter members.

PORTLAND SEMINARY

In 1893, as the church began to grow, they voted to hold services at the Portland Seminary School Building. The Portland Seminary School Building was where the older part of our church today stands facing the railroad.

CHURCH STREET

In August of 1895, the church had grown to a membership of 22. They voted to build a house of worship on a track of land located on Church Street. The building was dedicated on August 30, 1896.

A NEW GENERATION

In 1923, a fund raising campaign was started to secure funds for the building of a new church. Construction began in the summer of 1923. The large brick building contained 17 rooms and included a main auditorium which had a seating capacity of 425. The building was dedicated on August 4, 1929.

MISSION

In early 1948, a mission was established at Fountain Head. This mission was organized as a church on June 6, 1948 with 33 charter members.

On July 3, 1966, the church voted to establish a mission on Oak Street. The mission was first named Southside Baptist Mission but was later changed to Oak Street Baptist Mission.

EXPANSION

In February of 2001, FBC began a capital funding campaign to be called Forward Together. The goal of this campaign was to make a prayerful 3-year commitment to the church building program. In April of 2005, the church voted to move forward in constructing the new building. Construction of the new building, as well as renovations, were completed in 2008. FBC’s new campus has over 83,000 square feet of ministry space, which includes a 1,720 square foot Worship Center.
