Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

Day 1, Week 3 - Consider

Hebrews 12:1-3 (ESV)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

Matthew 14:28-31 (ESV)

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Psalm 16:8 (ESV)

I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the weight of life? Like you’re running a race that feels endless, and no matter how hard you try, you can’t find the strength to keep going? Hebrews 12:2 reminds us to “look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” This isn’t just a passing glance or a fleeting thought. It’s an intentional, determined focus on the One who has already endured the hardest race of all.

Think about Peter in Matthew 14. He steps out of the boat and onto the water, doing something impossible, because his eyes are locked on Jesus. But then the wind and waves grab his attention, and his focus shifts. Fear creeps in. The moment Peter takes his eyes off Jesus, he begins to sink. That’s what happens to us when the storms of life consume our thoughts. The distractions, the hardships, and the anxieties become so loud that they pull our focus away from Jesus, leaving us feeling overwhelmed.

Psalm 16:8 says, “I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.” Fixing your eyes on Jesus doesn’t mean the wind and waves disappear. It means that your heart is steadied by His presence. You’re not shaken because you know the One who calms the storm walks with you.

But let’s be honest—fixing your eyes on Jesus isn’t always easy. There are so many things competing for your attention. The pressures of work, the noise of social media, the constant pull of worry and doubt. Fixing your eyes on Jesus is a choice. It’s choosing to shift your focus away from the distractions and intentionally looking to Him. It’s waking up each day and saying, “Jesus, today is Yours. Help me see You above everything else.”

Jesus is not only the example of how to endure. He’s the reason you can endure. He’s the One who starts your faith and promises to carry it to completion. When you fix your eyes on Him, you find the strength to keep going. Not because the race gets easier, but because you’re running with the One who has already run it perfectly.

Today, let’s choose to fix our eyes on Jesus. Let’s set our hearts on who He is—faithful, present, and unchanging. He’s not just at the finish line. He’s right beside you, running this race with you. Keep your eyes on Him, and you’ll find the strength to take the next step, no matter how hard the journey feels.

Reflect: Where is your focus today? Are you consumed by the distractions and struggles, or are your eyes fixed on Jesus?

Pray: Jesus, help me to see You above everything else. When I feel overwhelmed, remind me to look to You and trust that You’re with me every step of the way.

Act: Take a moment today to pause and intentionally redirect your focus. Whether through prayer, Scripture, or worship, choose to fix your eyes on Jesus and trust Him with your race.
