Water baptism is only intended for those who have received salvation through Christ and who have become a disciple of Christ. Therefore, in obedience to Christ’s command and as a testimony to God, a disciple of Christ should be immersed in water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Water baptism is a visual and symbolic demonstration of our union with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection. It signifies that our former way of life has been put to death.
Why Should a Person Be Baptized?
The first reason a person should be baptized is to obey the commands of Christ and to follow His example. He was baptized (Mark 1:9), and commanded us to be baptized (Matthew 28:18-20).
A second reason a person should be baptized is to reveal an outward expression of an inward change. Baptism is a visible, public profession of a person's faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Baptism doesn't make you a follower of Jesus, but it publicly identifies you as one.
How Should a Person Be Baptized?
At FBC Portland, we baptize by immersion. In the New Testament the Greek word for baptism is βαπτίζω (baptizo), which literally means to plunge, submerge or immerse. When this word is used throughout the New Testament it suggests baptism by immersion. In fact, the representation of union to Christ in his death, burial and resurrection is best expressed through immersion.
